Meetings are held three times annually.
Benchmark feedback reports are returned to centers.
Meetings function as an instrument for ongoing education, discussion, and development of initiatives.
Requests for data submission occur approximately every 4 months and cover a one year timeframe of trauma patient admissions.
Each data submission is frame-shifted forward four months resulting in a purposeful overlap of data submissions.
Information provided in the benchmark feedback reports include: raw data (%), risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted morbidity, length of hospital stay, mechanical ventilator days, and ICU days.
Feedback reports are confidential and are for the sole use of the participating center. Individual center to aggregate data comparisons are provided.
Support for MTQIP collaborative quality initiative (CQI) is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network as part of the BCBSM Value Partnerships program. Although Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Care Network and MTQIP work collaboratively, the opinions, beliefs and viewpoints expressed by the author do not necessarily reflect the opinions, beliefs and viewpoints of BCBSM or any of its employees.
The initial program was made possible through grant funding provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation. Their three-year contribution supported creation of the pilot program, data coordination, data analysis, and report generation.
The trauma registry is an essential component of any trauma program. The trauma registry should function to drive an efficient and effective performance improvement program for the care of the injured patient. MTQIP utilizes the existing trauma center registries as their database to form a sustainable and cost-efficient system to track patient outcomes. Registry data are transferred to the MTQIP Coordinating Center for collation, data analysis, and generation of feedback reports.
The registry vendors that MTQIP can accommodate include:
V5 by Digital Innovations, Inc. by ESO
Trauma Base by Clinical Data Management by ESO
Data validation is performed through inter-rater reliability audits conducted remotely by MTQIP for participating centers.
The exchange of ideas between collaborative sites can lead to new quality improvement effort and the sharing of best practices in a cooperative environment. The collaborative performance improvement projects include:
Complication rate improvement
Hemorrhage management
Inferior vena cava filter placement
Mortality rate improvement
Timely antibiotic administration for open fractures
Traumatic brain injury management including patients on anticoagulants
Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis dosing, timing, and type
Site visits by MTQIP staff are conducted to review registry operations, complications and morbidities tracking, review of MTIQP reports, trauma center PI processes and integration of guidelines.
MTQIP's Advisory Board, established in January 2012, is composed of participating trauma surgeons from the MTQIP network. These surgeons collaborate with the program to offer strategic direction and constructive feedback on future initiatives.
